Aromas of fresh-baked cherry pie, ripe strawberries and blueberry jam are complemented by nuances of mint, black tea and clove that open slowly. A thick, rich mouthfeel bursting with wild berry preserves and vanilla delight and contrast with delicate tannins and notes of milk chocolate and butterscotch on the finish.
The growing season was one of the coolest we’ve experienced in a long time, with a late start, an unusually wet and cool spring and a late season ran in early June. Summer temperatures were cool overall until mid-September when temperatures reached the mid-90s for nearly a week. This led to ideal maturity, great depth and higher concentration of flavors in the grapes. Harvest began late September and was completed the beginning of October.
This wine is primarily composed of Zinfandel, blended with a small amount of Petite Sirah. Upon entering the winery, the hand-harvested grapes are destemmed, hand sorted and then whole berries are fermented in tank and half-ton macro bins before pressing. After five days of cold soaking, primary fermentation began with daily pump overs or punch downs. Individual lots were moved to barrels, then blended and barrel aged in French, American and Hungarian oak for 16 months prior to bottling, then aged another 12 months prior to release.
