This superbly crafted, limited wine boasts spicy aromas of vanilla, cedar, and black fruits with full flavors of mocha and chocolate, cedar, spice, clean and pretty delicate blue fruits, reminiscent of blueberry, blackberry and plum. The velvety texture and dazzling complexity are underscored by bright acidity, creating a naturally-balanced wine with a lingering, rich finish.

Medium-light to medium ruby; attractive, herbal, cherry and blackberry fruit aroma with hints of cedar, forest floor and cola; medium-full body; fleshy, textured, red and black fruit flavors with a silky mouthfeel; medium tannin; lingering aftertaste. Nicely balanced and elegant though still deserving several more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended.

Winemaker Notes

The Pinot Noir grapes are hand harvested and hand sorted in the field. The grapes are cold soaked for two to three days and fermented in small bins and stainless steel open-top fermentors. Various yeast strains are introduced to add complexity. Fermentors are punched down one to three times per day. Wines are pressed when dry and then placed in barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. The wines are aged for 10 months in new and neutral French oak barrels.

Vintage Notes

Surrounded by towering redwoods and forest, our Sky High Ranch Pinot Noir grapes are grown high above the fog line on the cool, steep slopes of Mendocino Ridge. The 2012 growing season was very consistent with no major heat events during bloom, set or verasion. We thinned the fruit on the vine for balance and to achieve optimal fruit flavors. Harvest began late September and concluded mid-October, before the rains started.
