2009 Ferrari-Carano Trésor
Aptly named “Tresor” for “treasure,” the grapes are hand harvested from dry-farmed, low-yielding vines primarily on our mountain vineyards. This wine’s upfront silkiness and roundness make for a delicious selection now and will drink well for 15 - 20 years.
Upon entering the winery, the grapes are destemmed, hand sorted and then whole-berry fermented in tank before pressing. Individual lots are moved to barrels for malolactic fermentation, then blended and barrel aged in new and older French oak for 19 months, allowing for the perfect balance of fruit intensity, tannin suppleness and oak sweetness.
Vibrant aromas and flavors of red and black berries, black tea, cedar, earth, vanilla, blackberry and cassis, combine with a full mid-palate with considerable, round tannins. Lingering sweet oak notes of dark chocolate add great depth.
Our Trésor complements lamb, beef and duck dishes that are roasted or braised. Try Trésor with strong-flavored cheeses such as Gorgonzola and sharp Cheddar.
A warm spring and moderate summer in 2009 gave way to an unseasonably early October rain event followed by dry, warm weather until November. All the mild weather had the grapes hanging on the vine up to two weeks later than usual. This extra hang time concentrated flavors and softened tannins. We finished picking all of the vineyards by the end of October. The result of this vintage year is vibrant and expressive wines that have great richness and elegance.
