2011 Ferrari-Carano Fiorella ChardonnayRussian River Valley
Delicious with citrus, pear, peach, floral, fig and caramel aromas. On the palate, hints of orange blossom and vanilla mingle with maple, nutmeg and a toasty oak finish. This is an elegant, well-balanced wine with nice acidity and a long, lingering finish.
The growing season got off to a late start with an unusually wet and cool spring. A late-season rain in early June stunted the size of the crop and created uneven growing patterns in many of our vineyards. Summer temperatures were cool overall until mid-September when temperatures reached the mid-90s for nearly a week. This led to great depth and higher concentration of flavors. The grapes were harvested from the beginning to middle of October.
The grapes for this wine are hand harvested, whole cluster pressed and then cold settled for 24 hours in stainless steel tanks before moving to barrels. Aged in select French oak, the grapes undergo 90 percent malolactic fermentation and are sur lie aged and stirred weekly for 8 months. The final blend was assembled in June, 2012, then moved to neutral French oak for a total of 15 months barrel aging, then bottled in February 2013.
Our Fiorella Chardonnay is the perfect wine to serve as an aperitif. It also pairs nicely with light pasta and seafood courses, white meats such as chicken, pork, turkey and veal. Mild-flavored cheeses are also excellent choices.
